For Thursday's lessons we did a VERY exciting thing...
Hooked PONY to the pony cart!
I have been teaching Napoleon to drive... and as you can see, his training is coming along really well. In all honesty, it hasn't taken much! Napoleon is a smart pony... so instead of boring him with repetitive ground driving, I first taught him to pull the drag that rakes our arena. And it was amazing how quickly he caught on! After a few short sessions, he was tucking his butt under him and really working. And after pulling the drag (which is heavy and NOISY), I knew the pony cart would be no big deal.
In fact, I think he rather enjoys it!
We did a few laps in the arena... the kids taking turns with 2 in the cart and 1 caravanning behind on super-sweet Ulduze (who is turning out to be a quite the kids horse). We borrowed this harness & cart from friends... and we're having so much fun with it, we now have big dreams of having our own. Preferably, we'd like to have a wagon... which we could haul hay bales in, or seat several kids at a time.
After the arena... we all went for a lovely ride down the driveway:
From left to right: Addie, me, Claire
And Siri on Ulduze
Everybody had a blast!
Up next on Tekes Tally-Ho...
We have 3 foals due for 2012! Stay tuned to find out which mares are mommies-to-be...

Driving is a great change of pace. Your pupils are getting a nice, well-rounded education. I believe that ground-driving teaches the rider the value of the outside rein. If the outside rein is completely surrendered in a turn the horse can turn around and face his driver. Oops!
I had the opportunity to drive mini's one time. They were so adorable.
a-dorable.
